‘Elsewhere, To Be Found’ brings together a body of work from a period of two years. During this time MacAthlaoich has explored the medium of painting as a mobiliser of ideas and an extension of his thought process. The works, varying in scale, categorise the observations made from this time period across three main locations, Ireland, Cyprus and Spain. The title suggests the search for alternative meanings, or at least an alternative way in visualising what we know to be true. MacAthlaoich looks to the work of French philosopher Roland Barthes in which semiotics are elegantly deciphered and employs Barthes’ approach to unmasking memories of places experienced, exposing hidden ideologies and meaning through his paintings.
